Sonya Nugent

Classical Teacher

Sonya began dancing at the age of 3 in Ireland, and upon moving to Australia, joined the Gail Harrison School of Dance. Entering her high school years, Sonya auditioned and was accepted to study at the Graduate College of Dance, under the direction of Terri Charlesworth, before moving to Austria to train at the Vienna State Opera Ballet School. While in Vienna, she worked with esteemed teachers and choreographers, expanding her knowledge of Contemporary, Classical and Character dance.

In 2004, Sonya returned to Perth to complete a Bachelor of Arts (Arts Management) at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. During her undergraduate studies, she performed with Youth Ballet WA and trained as a Classical and Contemporary dance teacher under the direction of Sonya Shepherd. From 2009-2014 Sonya lived in Vienna again, working as a Business English Language Trainer and teaching Adult Ballet Classes. In 2014, having once again returned home to Perth, Sonya rejoined the Charlesworth Ballet Community as Administration and Events Coordinator and later as Contemporary and Classical teacher in both the College and School.

In 2018, Sonya completed a Diploma of Education (Primary) and is currently employed by the Department of Education as a primary school teacher. Sonya has a keen interest in safe dance practice and injury prevention, and thoroughly enjoys bringing the joy of dance to students of all ages.

This year you will find Miss Sonya N at our North Perth studio, teaching ballet and contemporary to our Grade 7, Grade 8 and Senior level students.
